This Facebook post is a post calling out Americans, specifically parents of young children to get them involved in a cause that is very crucial in our society. Our society is dealing with the issue of gun violence, an issue that has been apparent in many states throughout the U.S. in hopes to reform our current process to obtain a firearm. It’s been proven repeatedly that our system has cracks and loopholes that allow people to obtain guns that should not have guns. As a result, thousands of people die yearly due to the easy access to guns. Unfortunately, many of these victims happen to be children, even when in school. I produced this post in efforts to reach out to parents of young children across the nation, to step up and fight for change.

I chose parents of young children specifically as my target audience because of certain characteristics that are common in parents. Love and protection of their kids are values held strongly by parents. This issue we have affects these parents and children directly as their children’s safety is at risk. If parents realize that their children’s safety can be improved, they will step up and try to fight for change. This is a fight for a better quality of life for parents, their kids, and for America.

I chose Facebook as my platform to reach my audience because Facebook connects thousands if not millions of people daily. In this day in age, social media has become a part of many people’s lives and is an effective way to share ideas to many. I chose to post this in a Facebook group called Parents Across America (PAA), a public group on Facebook connecting thousands of parents of diverse backgrounds in America. The group Parents Across America main agenda is to “share ideas and work together to improve our nation’s public schools. PAA is committed to bringing the voice of public school parents – and common sense – to local, state, and national education debates” as stated in their description.

In addition, I used a photo of children protesting gun violence to promote feelings of sympathy in my audience and make it relatable to their own children. To add on, I used logos as well when I shared statistics of children who have been affected by gun violence. This helps the viewers of the post why it is important to reform gun laws. I also made use of hashtags in my post. These hashtags will help my post reach users who follow or are interested in that specific hashtag or something similar.

This political cartoon illustrates how guns can be accessed dangerously easy. Though this political cartoon is exaggerated, it has a deeper meaning about Americas gun violence issue. Gun violence is such a big issue in this nation due to the easy access to firearms. With this weak system we have we put ourselves at risk every time we step outside of our home. This nation needs to enhance the system of obtaining a firearm to protect civilians against crimes and homicides due to guns.

I chose policy makers as my target audience for this political cartoon. This is because policy makers have the potential to initiate change in legislation. By reaching out to policy makers change can be made because they have the power and means to.

I find that this is an effective way to reach my audience because policy makers are very busy people. They might not have the time to read an article or watch a video. However, a political cartoon is one way where I can express my message in an image that would take only a minute to view. In addition, this political cartoon is easy to understand. This way my message is clear to my audience.

What is illustrated in the political cartoon is two police officers who have stopped a criminal who is in the middle of committing a crime. The criminal used a gun to help commit the crime. When questioned on how to gun was obtained, the criminal stated he obtained it from the gun shop after he passed his background check. It was ironic that the government allowed this man a gun and didn’t know he would misuse it. If our system was better, we would have known this man should not be given authority to purchase a gun. In this cartoon is was a robbery, but in the real world, it could have been a homicide. To keep ourselves and our nation safe, we need change in our gun laws.
